work
D. Tali Kavapalu, (b. 1981) better known, as Sunny Phono, has reduced his once intricate brush strokes to a one way blunt conversation using simple language and tools to convey a message of the future while rooted in imagery of cultures past. Having an indefinite understanding of either of his parents culture harbored an inter-identity with both cultures and frustration that is reconstructed in a simplistic yet abstract format. Taking cues from Jean-Michel Basquiat and Jackson Pollock’s expressionism inspires Sunny Phono to arrive at an end result that depicts a language that is unique to himself. The electromagnetic spectrum and analog waveforms inform his process that synthesize into characters that are the sum of numerous strokes, and lines. Characteristics are synonymous to alternating current waves that can be seen in the eyes of his characters, and taking the form of an infinite loop.
