STEVE MARTINEZ
work

As far back as I can remember I have always enjoyed drawing and it only took me 25 years to get the courage to start painting. Once I saw that I had the ability to paint, I knew it was going to be the beginning of something that would change my life forever. I love the fact of being able to create something out of nothing, the ability to construct what ever is in my mind. For the most part I like to paint with acrylics but I do tend to mix it up from time to time. I select materials based on subject matter and the message that I am expressing through my work. I truly believe in being as original and different as I possibly can, which is very difficult since so many great artists have done pretty much everything before me. One theme that does reoccur a lot in my pieces is Mayan symbols and graphic design elements. The reasons for these are very simple, one being my nationality and the other being my love for graphic design.

My most recent work has a lot to do with life experiences and current events. I love to travel and when I do I tend to photograph places I’ve been and things I’ve seen or done. A lot of those photographs will end up being used as reference or will end up in some kind of design. I also like to mash up different styles, for example incorporating a simple two-dimensional object right next to something very realistic and rendered. In the past I was afraid to take chances with certain things but I think it was do to my lack of skill and painting IQ. I feel its very important to keep pushing myself forward in all aspects of my work along with continuing incorporating photography, graphic design elements and any other techniques I pick up along the way.
