Nathan Smith
Nathan Smith is a Los Angeles based painter who’s love of creative expression was founded in the cryptic letterforms left throughout the cityscape of Los Angeles by his soon to be contemporary graffiti artists. His current works are self portraits that focus on anonymity and the truth that is expressed through the loss of physical identity. Not to be confused with the now celebrated “street artists,” anonymity plays a crucial role in the successful career of an illegal graffiti artist. Nathan uses shapes textures as a binary code creating clouds of hieroglyphic texts that float through his pieces. The masked figures and aggressive strokes in the backgrounds of his portraits further capture the aggressiveness of the graffiti subculture he has been emerged in for the past 15 years. Utilizing and adapting to different mediums and applications has become a signature in his recent works that sometimes contain up to ten different mediums and applications.
